23-year-old excludes mom's “opinionated” new boyfriend from graduation party after he insults her degree in social work: 'Why invite someone who isn't supportive?'

I never had a graduation party. In fact, my graduation took place entirely on Zoom, and I got my degree and tassle mailed to me along with a tube of confetti. 2020 was a fun year. I'm not sure I would have been able to successfully throw a meaningful party to celebrate anyhow. I went to university more than ten hours away by car from my hometown, so I either would have had to exclude my hometown friends, have it at home, or host two separate parties.

In our story today, a young graduate wants to celebrate her educational milestone with the people who love and support her. Her mom's boyfriend isn't on the invite list because he does not meet the aforementioned criteria. Instead of being proud of her efforts, he openly criticizes and belittles the value of her degree. Unfortunately, it looks like mom might not be at the party, either, as she takes her man's side instead of her daughter's in this family feud.

If Doug really wants to attend, he can take responsibility for his callous comments and apologize. But there really is no reason to invite a guy who thinks your degree is a sham to the party you are throwing specifically to celebrate the hard work you put in to get that degree.

If this man is invited, he's totally just going to be sat grumpily to the side and engaging with no one. He thinks he's above all of these simple-minded people that can't see that this degree is totally worthless.
